Report on the exhibition in Berlin

The MAREBOX exhibition vol. 2: EMERGENT STRATEGIES FROM THE DEEP was hosted at SAVVY Contemporary art space, from November 14 to November 28, 2021. The opening of the exhibition was completed with great success on 13th of November. The artists and participants of the MAREBOX Residency joined the opening of the Exhibition in Berlin, showcased their work and formed artistic discussions with other invited artists and guests. During the evening, the live music composition by Marque Gilmore (artist, MAREBOX participant) enhanced the festive atmosphere of the opening.

The ensemble of the presented artworks showcased the challenge of navigating Mediterranean, through stories about identity, trade, war, migration, colonialism, and degradation of the marine environments.

On November 28th, the closing of the exhibition was accompanied by a listening session by Leila Bencharnia (artist). The closing event also served as a reflection time on the sea’s challenges, with a focus on migration and crossing of the Mediterranean Sea.

The exhibition received more than 500 visitors in total. EMERGENT STRATEGIES FROM THE DEEP managed to traced maritime undercurrents and navigate the flux of the sea, opening as an archive of passageways and its ever evolving ripple effects. The purpose of this exhibition was to trace underwater memory, the sea’s life and corporality in a way that activates stories, experiences and forms of critical knowledge narrated by water.
